Taxi drivers require an Enhanced DBS Check to ensure they are suitable to work in a role that involves regular contact with the public, including children and vulnerable adults.
Under guidance from the Department for Transport, licensing authorities must ensure that all taxi and private hire drivers meet strict safeguarding standards. An Enhanced DBS Check provides the highest level of criminal record information available, helping organisations make informed and responsible decisions.
An Enhanced DBS Check includes:
- A search of the Police National Computer for any convictions, cautions, warnings, or reprimands (both spent and unspent)
- A check against the Children’s and Adult’s Barred Lists (where applicable)
- Any additional relevant information held by local police forces
This level of detail is essential, as taxi drivers often work alone with passengers and may be in positions of trust. The Enhanced DBS Check helps identify any risks and ensures that only suitable individuals are licensed to operate.
DBS Update Service
The Statutory Taxi & Private Hire Vehicle Standards, issued by the Department for Transport, states that all licensed drivers must be subject to a criminality check every six months. They encourage drivers to sign up to the DBS Update Service to allow licensing authorities to manage this.
